Stench from sewage spill raises alarm in Gurgaon One housing society

Gurgaon One residents said continuous spill from the sewage chamber raises a stink and damages the Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road

For nearly a month, sewage spill on the Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road has made life miserable for residents of Gurgaon One housing complex in Sector 22.

Residents claimed that despite repeated complaints to the authorities, no action has been taken. They said that with the stench getting unbearable, they had to take the onus of getting the muck off the road on several occasions.

Residents said the sewer line running along the Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road, between Palam Vihar crossing and the road leading to Electronic City in Sec 18 has been in a deplorable state for almost a year.

They said the condition of the road, which has already suffered plenty of wear and tear, is getting still worse due to the sewage spill. They said that it not only poses a health risk for them, but is also a hazard for commuters motoring on the stretch. They said the overflowing sewage and garbage pile lead to regular snarls on the road as well.

“When school buses arrive to pick up or drop off our children, we fear standing near the garbage pile or sewage spill as they are ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes,” Sanjay Sehgal, a resident of Gurgaon One, said.

Residents said there have already been several mishaps involving motorists as they tried to skirt the potholes, broken patches of the road or the sewage spill and more such incidents cannot be ruled out till such time the authorities don’t resolve the situation.

“The sewage spill right opposite the gate of Gurgaon One has become a perennial hassle for us. Mosquitoes breed on it and the stench that it throws up poses a health risk for us. Repeated complaints to the MCG have not yielded any results,” Navneet Singh Sahni, president, residents’ welfare association, Gurgaon One, said.

Residents said the discharge of sewage from a nearby hotel and another unauthorised establishment on the road has left it flooded with effluents.

“We spend a lump sum regularly to clear the sewage spill off the road. The stench is particularly unbearable during the rainy season. Why should we be made to suffer this way when we don’t default on our taxes?” Aarti Kumar, another resident of Gurgaon One, said.

“We are aware of the situation and our executive engineer has been deployed on the spot to oversee the removal of sewage. The sewage clearing work is in progress and will be done soon,” SS Rohilla, MCG spokesperson, said.
