Gurugram: Pioneer Park residential society faced 30-hour power outage after transformer burst

A blast in a transformer at Sector 56 substation, supplying electricity to Pioneer Park group housing society in Sector 61, resulted in a 30-hour-long outage early Wednesday morning.

The electricity went off at 4.50am on Wednesday and the supply was restored around 2.30pm Thursday, residents said, adding that fluctuations continued throughout the day. The blast in transformer occurred due to a technical glitch and officials of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN), which is the transmission agency and the custodian authority of the substation, said it will only be in a position to replace it by Saturday. Meanwhile, the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN), the distribution agency, said it is supplying electricity to the society from other feeders.

Anil Yadav, HVPN superintending engineer, said, “We tried to repair the transformer but it did not work out. Now, we have arranged for a new transformer that will be installed by Saturday.”

The DHBVN said that it has restored the supply temporarily. “We informed the residents about the fault at the substation on time. We arranged for electricity from a nearby feeder on a temporary basis and a new transformer will be installed by Saturday,” said Asutosh Kumar, DHBVN executive engineer.

Residents said that the electricity supply to the society has been a problem since they started moving here in 2016. This is due to the fact that the society only has a temporary electricity connection from an 11kv (kilovolt) feeder, like many other developing residential societies along the Southern and Northern Peripheral Roads (sectors 58-115) that are fully or partially occupied and suffer on account of inadequate civic infrastructure.

Sanjay Chandra, a resident, said, “Even if a new transformer is installed, our electricity supply will not improve until the DHBVN gives us electricity from a 33kv line. We have the DHBVN or the government supplying us with electricity, but that is not a big help for us as we use diesel gensets more and pay ₹21/unit.”

The residents said voltage fluctuation and tripping are regular problems. Tripti Singh, a resident, said, “We want permanent electricity solution. Diesel gensets are costly and not environment-friendly.”

The DHBVN said that a 33kv station has to be built at Pioneer Park.
