Women's sex mysteries

Women with low sexual function are three to four times more likely to have low levels of sex hormone.

Men have always found women mysterious, whether it is their body or mind. However now, they can look forward to getting some of the answers, thanks to an Australian research.

According to News.com, researchers at the Jean Hailes Foundation in Melbourne have discovered the mysterious chemistry behind women's levels of sexual desire, arousal and responsiveness.

The researchers have found that the testosterone levels, as believed, are not related to women's libidos. They also discovered that women with low sexual function are three to four times more likely to have low levels of the sex hormone DHEAS.

In a study covering 1423 women aged between 18 and 75,the researchers found that who had scores for desire, arousal and responsiveness had lowest levels of DHEAS.

They also found that levels of the sex hormones including DHEAS, total testosterone and free testosterone ,drop sharply in women from the mid-20s onwards.

The research "debunks the whole idea you diagnose female androgen insufficiency, which is meant to be low sexual function, by measuring blood testosterone," The director of research at Jean Hailes, Susan Davis, said.

"Although multiple factors contribute to sexual interest, we have demonstrated that low DHEAS is more likely in a woman experiencing low sexual desire and arousal than in other women.The findings from this study are absolutely fundamental to developing a sound clinical approach to the assessment of women presenting with low libido," Davis added.

Professor Davis explained that women who complain of low libido but have normal testosterone levels need to get a treatment and must get their DHEAS level measured.
