Dev Patel, who is best known for his role in the Academy Award-winning Slumdog Millionaire (2008), will soon team up with the District 9 (2009) director, Neill Blomkamp. The upcoming sci-fi project is based on Blomkamp’s short film, Tetra Vaal.

At present, Dev seems to be on a movie-signing spree. A few days ago, he signed on as the lead actor in The Man Who Knew Infinity, a biopic based on the life of mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. And now, he is all set to come on board Blomkamp’s project, Chappie, opposite Sharlto Copley.

Chappie is likely to go on the floors after the release of the Matt Damon-starrer, Elysium. Blomkamp has also written the script. Tetra Vaal is a parody on a robotic police force in South Africa’s slums. Sharlto plays a police robot and Dev will be seen as a man living in the impoverished town. The actor will also be seen in the TV series, The Newsroom, which premieres on Sunday in the US.

Dev also has Gren Wells’s The Road Within. His last big release was John Madden’s Judi Dench-starrer, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011).

Blomkamp has been in the news after he ruled himself out as a replacement for JJ Abrams to direct Star Trek 3. “I used to be a Star Trek: The Next Generation fan. Like, big time. But no, I probably wouldn’t do that,” he said in an interview.
