The first trailer for The Predator, 20th Century Fox’s reboot of the popular science-fiction films, was released online on Thursday. The film is set between the events of Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010).

Directed by Iron Man 3’s Shane Black - who had an acting role in the original 1987 Predator film, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger - the new film takes a different approach to the material. The first film was about a group of elite forces men tasked with a hostage rescue mission that’s interrupted by an alien predator.

This film highlights the science-fiction elements of the story. We see a young boy (played by Room’s Jacob Tremblay) who inadvertently invites the aliens to earth. Only a group of elite soldiers can fight this powerful threat. They’re aided in their mission by a scientist played by Olivia Munn.

She tells them that the Predators have been going from planet to planet, beefing up their DNA. It is now Earth’s turn.

The trailer is short, but it features brief glimpses of the sort of movies Black is best known for - buddy comedies such as Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and more recently, The Nice Guys.

The Predator stars an eclectic cast made up of Boyd Holborook, Sterling K Brown, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan Michael-Key and Alfie Allen. The film is scheduled for a September 14 release, putting it directly in competition with Conjuring spin-off, The Nun.
