The first trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a new animated movie that will introduce Miles Morales, the first black Spider-Man, was released on Sunday. The movie will start a new Spidey franchise that will run parallel to Marvel’s Tom Holland-centric series.
After the disappointing box office and fan reception to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 starring Andrew Garfield, Sony arrived at an agreement with Marvel, which would allow them to bring their most popular character to the record-breaking Marvel Cinematic Universe. The new version of the character was introduced in Captain America: Civil War and was given his own movie earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Sony forged ahead with their plans of creating a series of their own, featuring Miles Morales, a fan favourite character from the comics. The new movie, titled Into the Spider-Verse, teases a universe in which multiple Spider-Men - or at least, kids with special Spidey powers - exist.
The film has been written and produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who were recently booted off the Han Solo Star Wars movie. They’ve previously made The Lego Movie and directed both the Jump Street movies. Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, the film will star The Get Down’s Shameik Moore as Morales, with supporting turns by Liev Schreiber, Mahershala Ali, and Brian Tyree Henry.
The film is scheduled for a December 14, 2018 release.
