As La La Land, Moonlight, and Lion gear up for the 89th Academy Awards (they’re poised to create records of their own), here are some interesting facts about the Oscars that you probably didn’t know.

1. Emil Jannings was named the first Best Actor for The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh in 1929.

2. At the age of just 10, Tatum O’Neal won Best Supporting Actress for Paper Moon in 1973, which made her the youngest Oscar winner.


3. Christopher Plummer was the oldest Oscar winner. At the age of 82, he won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Beginners in 2012.

4. 1959’s Ben-Hur, 1997’s Titanic and 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King had most wins for a single film, with 11 Academy Awards each.


5. Walt Disney has won 22 Academy Awards, which is the most wins by an individual.


6. Katharine Hepburn is the only actress to have won 4 Oscars for Leading Roles - the most by any actor.

7. Daniel Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson and Walter Brennan, have the most Best Actor Oscars with three statues.

8. 3048 Oscar statues have been given out since they started in the year 1929.


9. Each statue weighs 3.8kg.

10. The statues are made of solid bronze and are plated in 24-karat gold.
