An astrologer’s prediction of a girl child allegedly led to a pregnant woman being attacked by her in-laws in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district about 10 days ago.
The incident came to light after the woman approached police on Wednesday to file a complaint against her husband and his family.
The woman, N Girija, alleged that her in-laws tried to set her alight on the night of August 20 when she was sleeping. Girija though managed to run out of the house and raise an alarm. Locals came to her rescue and admitted her in a hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.
The incident occurred in G Kandriga village in Mutukur ‘mandal’ (block), Nellore district, Andhra police said.
A case of attempt to murder has been registered against husband T Srinivasulu and his family.
Girija was married in 2014 and has one daughter. She claims that her in-laws began harassing her after an astrologer predicted that her second child will also be a girl. She further claimed that she had been facing harassment over dowry too.
