The woman, Biwi Gudiya, of Isakchak locality in Bhagalpur town, 106 km southeast of Patna, was admitted at sadar hospital, a district-level government medicare facility, in a serious condition on Tuesday evening.

Family members said Gudiya had undergone a caesarean section at the sadar hospital on May 9 and was discharged after her stiches were removed on Tuesday.

Alleging that stitches had been removed before they were properly dried, Gudiya’s family members said her intestine started protruding from the wound soon after she had her meal at home.

Gudiya’s husband Mohammad Sayeem said the girl born to them on May 9 was their second child. The first child was also born by cesarean section, he added.

Civil surgeon Dr Vijay Kumar, however, denied any neglilence on part of doctors. “The allegation that stiches were removed early is baseless. A week’s time is generally considered sufficient for drying of stitches in cases of C-section,” he said.

The wounds have now been properly sealed and the patient was stable, he said. Protein deficiency and low immunity could be responsible for Gudiya’s problem, the civil surgeon added.

Kumar said burst abdomen cases were very rare. “An episode of burst abdomen is generally reported in one out of five lakh people. In my medical career, this is the second such case,” Kumar said, adding that he had come across such incident for the first time in 1980 when he was posted in Patna. .
