The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a probe against a former Inspector General (IG) and a serving Commandant of the CRPF on charges of violating procurement rules and seeking bribes.

During its investigation, the CBI will also look into allegation of a nexus between officials of India’s largest central armed police force and private contractors and suppliers.

The CBI had registered an FIR against former IG Suraj Bhan Kajal and Commandant Shyam Sunder following a CRPF complaint against them.

The CRPF told the CBI that in its preliminary enquiry charges of misconduct, corruption/illegal gratification and misuse of official position have prima facie been established. The procurement of riot control helmets and unauthorised uniforms has come under the scanner and there is a suspicion that other items like batteries, and ACs might have been distributed to recruits at a higher rate.
