Delhi building collapse LIVE: An eyewitness said the collapse was preceded by a sound that reminded him of an earthquake, after which people trapped inside began shouting, “save us”.

“We were sitting inside it when we suddenly heard a sound—like the rumble of an earthquake. We rushed out immediately; there was a lot of smoke and dust here. The entire building had collapsed,” he told news agency ANI.

“Sounds are still coming from within the rubble - children crying out, ‘Save us, save us!’... There are at least 25–30 children,” he added.

Another witness told news agency PTI that the building began shaking in a way that made people believe an earthquake had struck.

“The entire building shook as if it were at the epicentre of a major earthquake. We genuinely thought an earthquake had struck,” he said.

“This is a very unfortunate incident. This building was not constructed today or yesterday. It was an old building. What has happened is very unfortunate, and our prayer to God is that all the people who are trapped inside are safely brought out. Some people have been injured. We pray to God that they recover as soon as possible, and the government should make the strictest possible arrangements to ensure that such an incident does not happen in the future,” Bidhuri said.

Delhi building collapse LIVE: Police said that a PCR call was received at PS South Campus at about 1:34 PM regarding a building collapse at Satya Niketan Market. “Teams of Delhi Police, NDRF, Delhi Fire Service and DDMA, along with fire tenders and CATS ambulances, reached the spot and commenced rescue operations. Jt. CP/New Delhi Range, DCP/South-West District and Addl. DCP are supervising the operation,” police said in a statement, adding that the building was 40–50-year-old, comprising of a basement and five upper floors, and it was used as a PG accommodation . “Repair work was underway in the basement when the incident occurred,” police said.

Delhi building collapse LIVE: Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda termed the building collapse as ‘painful’ and said that this was not the time for ‘political blame game’.

“This is not the time for a political blame game. This is the time for rescue. We are all engaged in the rescue operation, and our teams are working. There can be nothing more painful than this. Three children have been rescued so far. An estimated 25-26 children are still inside, though authorities have not yet given us the exact number...Questions have been raised earlier over fire safety, building safety, building maps, and the functioning of MCD, NDMC, and other authorities. Whatever government is in power will have to answer. I am here not as a politician but as a former Delhi University student and as a human being. But we will seek answers,” he said.

While at least 40 people are feared trapped under debris, six to seven have been rescued and taken to the hospital.
Three injured are said to be in a critical condition at AIIMS.

A PCR call was received at South Campus police station at 1.34 pm regarding the collapse of a building near Nanakpura Gurdwara, the police said.
