Chennai: The ruling DMK on Wednesday gave chief minister M K Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin a second tenure as the secretary of the party’s youth wing. Since party MP K Kanimozhi has been elevated as a deputy secretary, her position as women’s wing secretary has been given to former MP Helen Davidson.

Udhayanidhi has been credited with revitalising the party, a year after he became a first-time MLA, raising expectations among his supporters that he be elevated to a ministerial position. He will have nine deputies in the youth wing. In 2019, Udhaynidhi was first appointed to the post – previously occupied by his father Stalin for more than four decades. Udhayanidhi, an MLA from Chennai’s Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency, has in recent interviews said he should concentrate more on politics and less on his acting career. “I see this as a very big responsibility,” Udhayanidhi told reporters on Wednesday. Later, he met Stalin at his residence.

The appointments were announced by party general secretary Durai Murugan. Lok Sabha MP and Stalin’s half-sister Kanimozhi, who held the post of women’s wing secretary for over a decade, was appointed as a deputy general secretary on October 9 in what was seen as an elevation for her in the party hierarchy – the fourth in the pecking order. She is now one of the four deputy secretaries. Previously, Kanimozhi was appointed as the chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Rural Development and Panchayat Raj. Davidson who will be DMK’s new women’s wing secretary will be assisted by Vijaya Thayanban.

Durai Murugan also announced that DMK’s meeting with district secretaries will be held on December 1 at the party headquarters in Chennai.
