Militant killed in gunbattle with security forces in J-K’s Kupwara

The encounter started after army’s 47 RR and Jammu and Kashmir Police cordoned off Nagri village near Drugmulla following a specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

One militant was killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Nagri area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Tuesday morning.

Army identified the militant as Sameer Ahmed Wani, a local from Dooru area of Sopore in North Kashmir. According to police, Wani was a top Hizb divisional Commander.

The encounter started after army’s 47 RR and Jammu and Kashmir Police cordoned off Nagri village near Drugmulla following a specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

According to police, the militants started firing when challenged. The encounter started at 6 am and continued till 9 am.

One AK rifle and some ammunition were recovered from the encounter site, the official added. The gunbattle has since ended.
