Safidon station house officer Samarjeet Singh said they lodged a complaint following her father’s statement on Thursday and arrested the three accused. They will be produced in a court on Friday.

The student had accused two men of drugging, repeatedly raping and blackmailing her for months. She has also accused a female friend from her village of abetting the two men.

A police officer said on the condition of anonymity that Ravi and Balram had befriended the student through Poonam and raped her in a hotel in March after drugging her.

They also clicked her photographs and raped her repeatedly for months while threatening to post her pictures on the internet. Poonam was helping the accused in blackmailing her, the officer said.

The officer, quoted above, said the student consumed some poisonous substance at her home on Wednesday. After primary treatment, she narrated the ordeal to her father and also told him about the suicide note she had left in a notebook.

The officer said the victim’s condition later deteriorated and she was referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak, where she died during treatment.
