This was done because the Centre has decided to increase monthly pension to freedom fighters and their dependents - spouses (widows/widowers), daughters and parents- from August 15 under the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension Scheme, 1980, a government spokesperson said.

He said monthly pensions of former political prisoners of Andaman/their spouses will increase from Rs 24,775 to Rs 30,000.

Besides, Dearness Relief System will now be based on All India Consumer Price Index for industrial workers, the earlier annual basis has been discontinued, he said, adding it has been replaced by the Dearness Allowance System applicable twice a year.

Therefore, it has been directed to modify existing Pension Payment Orders of freedom fighter pensioners and eligible dependents of deceased freedom fighters to effect payment of revised monthly pension, he added.
