2 dead, several feared trapped after landslide in Mumbai's Kurla following heavy rain
The landslide took place in Mumbai's Kurla area after heavy rain lashed the city on Tuesday.
Two people have died, while at least six others are feared trapped under the debris after a landslide in Mumbai's Kurla area in wee hours of Wednesday following heavy rain, officials said.
Police said the rescue operations are underway with personnel from BMC, NDRF and other agencies deployed at the spot. The incident took place at around 3 am, DCP Ganesh Shinde said, adding that around four to five people are feared trapped.
“Due to the rain, a landslide has occurred in the Ashoknagar area under the jurisdiction of the Ghatkopar police. Two bodies have been recovered so far, and rescue operation is underway. Police personnel are deployed here, along with all the necessary teams for the rescue operation—including officials from the BMC, NDRF, and other agencies. It happened around 3 AM. Around 4–5 people are likely trapped,” Shinde told news agency ANI.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde also reached the spot to supervise the search and rescue operations.
On Tuesday, heavy rainfall lashed Mumbai with SpiceJet issuing an advisory to passengers.
Mumbai has witnessed spells of heavy rainfall in recent weeks, disrupting air traffic and affecting operations at the city’s airport. The monsoon rains have also caused waterlogging and disrupted road and other transport services across parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department has issued rain alerts during periods of intense rainfall.
Two dead, two injured so far
Officials said that two people have suffered injuries in the incident so far and have been identified as Sohel Ansari, 18, and Mohamad Ansari, 14. Both have been taken to a hospital for treatment where they are said to be in a stable condition.
The two deceased have been identified as Sahil Ansari, 28, and Mohamad Samir, 14, who were declared brought dead at Rajawadi Hospital.
Visuals shared from the spot of landslide showed relatives of the deceased mourning with people nearby consoling them as the ambulance took away the dead bodies.
Two killed in fire accident
The landslide comes hours after two people were killed and six others injured after a fire broke out in a 12-storey residential building in Mumbai's Vile Parle area.
The blaze erupted in two flats on the 11th floor of Shanta Bhavan building at around 10 pm on Tuesday, officials said, news agency ANI reported.
The fire spread to electrical wiring and installations, an AC unit and other household articles in an area of around 4,000 square feet in the two houses, the officials said. Eight persons, including two fire personnel, were injured and rushed to two hospitals.
A two-and-a-half-year-old child, identified as Abir, and a woman, Ankita (23), were declared brought dead at the Nanavati Hospital, a civic official said.
