Law books, warm clothes in jail for Aftab, Shraddha Walkar murder accused

A Delhi court on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of Shraddha Walkar muder accused Aftab Poonawala for the next 14 days. However, the Tihar jail authorities have agreed to his demand of being provided with law books to study. The court has also directed the authorities to provide him with warm clothes.

Earlier, the jail authorities had provided him with a copy of ‘The Great Railway Bazaar: By Train Through Asia’, a travelogue by American novelist Paul Theroux after he had requested them to provide him with English novels and literature books to read.

Accused of murdering his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar and chopping her body into 35 pieces, Poonawala has been lodged at cell no 15 of Jail No 4. He shares his cell with two other inmates and indulges in games of chess. Jail officials told ANI that sometimes he plays chess alone and plots his moves.

On January 6, Poonawala had moved an application for the release of his debit and credit cards which were earlier seized by the police. His lawyer had said Poonawala was in urgent need of money for purchasing warm clothes as his family has broken all ties with him.

Poonawala allegedly sawed the body of his live-in partner, Shraddha Walkar, into 35 pieces and kept them in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his house in south Delhi's Mehrauli before dumping them across the city over several days.

According to officials, the DNA samples extracted from bones and hair fragments found in forest areas in south Delhi's Qutub Minar and Chhattarpur have been found to be matched with Shraddha's father and brother.
