A man and his mother face charges of attempted murder and dowry harassment after his wife was allegedly pushed off the roof of their house in the Garhmukteshwar area of eastern Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district on January 15, police said on Friday.

The woman, identified as Nargis, was left with broken bones in her hands as well as injuries on her back, and her parents took her to Muzaffarnagar where she was admitted to the district hospital on January 17.

Based on the woman’s complaint, police registered a case against husband Shaan Mohammad, who is on the run, her mother-in-law and two more people.

It was alleged that Mohammad, who married Nargis of of Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar five years ago, had been demanding dowry and he pushed her off the terrace when she refused to meet his demands, police said.

According to news agency PTI, the husband threw her off the terrace after he gave her instant triple talaq, an Islamic practice of divorcing one’s wife that the Supreme Court has ruled as illegal.

Police said the husband and her in-laws had been harassing her for dowry ever since she got married.

She was allegedly assaulted before being pushed off the roof on January 15 after the man asked her to bring Rs 3 lakh from her parents, police said.

“The woman was admitted to the district hospital in a serious condition. She has received injuries, including bone fractures,” said Minakshi Sharma, the station house officer of the women’s police station in Muzaffarnagar.
