BSF troops on Sunday shot dead an intruder, suspected to be guide from Pakistan to conduct a recce, who crossed into the Indian territory along the international border in Hiranagar sub-sector in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Around 6:30 am, BSF jawans shot dead a Pakistani intruder, who had crossed the border and was found roaming suspiciously behind the Indian fence,” BSF Jammu frontier inspector general (IG) Ram Awtar said.

A BSF spokesman said the intruder crossed the border and ran towards the fence on the Indian side. On being challenged by the BSF troops, the individual didn’t stop. “In apprehension of malicious intentions, the individual was shot by the bordermen,” he said.

The IG, Awtar said the intruder’s identity is yet to be ascertained, but he seemed to be “a guide”, who probably had been “sent by Pakistan”, “to conduct a recce and to see the alertness of BSF troops”.

Awtar said there was no exchange of fire between BSF and Pakistan Rangers.

Senior officers have rushed to the area to take stock of the situation, he added.
