Bhagwant Mann, Punjab’s chief minister-designate, resigned from the Lok Sabha on Monday. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader tendered his resignation to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla. Mann, who represented the Sangrur constituency in the Lower House of Parliament, is set to take oath as the chief minister of Punjab on March 16.
"I will miss this House. The people of Punjab have given me a huge responsibility to serve the whole of the state. I promise the people of Sangrur that another AAP voice will soon resonate in Lok Sabha," Mann told reporters.
The two-time Lok Sabha MP won the Dhuri Assembly seat by over 58,000 votes in the recently concluded election in the border state.
Taking to social media platform Koo earlier in the day, Mann wrote, "Going to Delhi today, I am resigning from the post of Sangrur MP. The people of Sangrur have given me so much love for so many years, thank you. Now that I have the opportunity to serve the whole of Punjab, I promise the people of Sangrur that in a few months their voice will be heard again in the Lok Sabha," he had written.
Following the resignation, the 48-year-old AAP leader invited the people of the state for his oath-taking ceremony and urged men to wear 'basanti' (yellow) turbans and women 'dupatta' (shawl) of the same colour.
The oath-taking ceremony is set to take place at Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, in the Nawanshahr district. In a video message uploaded on his Twitter handle, Mann urged people to fulfill the dreams of Singh.
Mann had defeated Congress candidate Dalvir Singh Goldy in the Punjab Assembly polls by a margin of 58,206 votes. The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP swept the Punjab Assembly with a whopping 92 seats of the total 117 seats in its kitty.
