Saharanpur: Dalit family holds wedding function amid tight security

Saharanpur has been in the grip of caste violence since April. On May 5, Dalits had objected to a procession of Thakurs to mark the birth anniversary of Rajput king Maharana Pratap, triggering clashes among the two groups.

After days of tension following caste clashes, the residents of Shabbirpur village in Saharanpur district had a reason to celebrate as a Dalit family solemnised the marriage of two women on Friday.

Though Dharampal and Faqirchand, grandfather and father of the brides, were concerned about the safety of the ‘baraatis’, the function passed off peacefully.

The police deployed in the village in the aftermath of the May 5 violence kept a close vigil in the area to ensure no untoward incident took place.

The wedding function was earlier scheduled to be held in the evening but due to the tense atmosphere in the district, the marriages were solemnised during the day.

In their bid to revive lost trust between Dalits and Rajputs, a few Thakurs, including ex Pradhan of Shabbirpur Om Singh, joined in the celebrations.
