Modi-Putin meet highlights: PM Modi, Russia's Putin attend Nomad Games after the SCO Summit meeting

During a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "India is hosting the BRICS Summit in a few days, and all Indians are eager to welcome you and your delegation. Your visit will strengthen our bilateral relations and further reinforce dialogue and cooperation within the BRICS framework."

Translating President Putin's words, a translator says, "...I would like to note with satisfaction that Russian-Indian relations continue to strengthen on the basis of the principles of a special and privileged partnership. Distinguished Prime Minister, this is aided by your special attention to Russian-Indian relations and the business and friendly relations that have been established between us. I am very grateful to you for that."

Founded in 2001 by China and Russia together with the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, the SCO has expanded to include India, Pakistan, Iran and Belarus as members, while Afghanistan and Mongolia have observer status and another 15 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, are so-called “dialogue partners.”

Govt Sources told news agency ANI that during PM Modi's meeting with the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, the issue of seafarers was raised.

rime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday that India wants to "expand and diversify" the trade basket with Iran in the "times to come" and called for resolution of the West Asia conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Modi held talks with Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the SCO summit in this capital city of Kyrgyzstan.

"Met President Masoud Pezeshkian in Bishkek. Reiterated our commitment to strengthening India's long standing friendship with Iran across diverse sectors," the prime minister said on social media.

"We want to expand and diversify our trade basket in the times to come. We had a discussion on the prevailing situation in the region. India will continue to support all efforts aimed at ensuring lasting peace," he said.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the two leaders discussed the West Asia conflict and shared perspectives on the evolving situation.

"The prime minister expressed concern at the escalation of tensions in the region and reiterated India's consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy," it said.

Modi also reiterated the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.

"Calling for safeguarding the freedom of navigation and commerce, he emphasised that civilians and civilian infrastructure, including commercial shipping and seafarers must not be harmed under any circumstances," the MEA said.

"Reiterating India's readiness to closely cooperate with Iran in multilateral organisations, including BRICS and SCO, the prime minister conveyed that he looked forward to welcoming President Pezeshkian to India for the BRICS Summit," it said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games in Bishkek on Monday as part of his official visit to Kyrgyzstan.

PM Modi arrived in Bishkek on Sunday, the second leg of his two-country visit after concluding his state visit to Uzbekistan. During his stay, the Prime Minister will attend the 6th World Nomad Games and participate in the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

PM Modi is visiting Bishkek at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov.

Tehran still seeks a negotiated solution to its conflict with the United States, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Monday, according to semi-official Tasnim news agency, following renewed clashes between the two countries.

Pezeshkian told Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, that continued war was in no one's interest and that dialogue and cooperation were the way to resolve existing problems.

PM Modi is also due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin later Monday, putting another of India’s longstanding relationships in focus at the SCO gathering. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Putin are also expected to hold talks on the sidelines of the summit, having met around 10 times since Russia invaded Ukraine four-and-a-half years ago.

Earlier today, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with his Armenian counterpart Nikol Pashinyan. The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across various areas, including defence, economic, pharma, science and technology, culture and education. They also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the situation in West Asia. PM Modi reiterated that India looked forward to working closely with Armenia to further deepen and expand bilateral ties.

Later in the day, PM Modi is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and attend the official opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Monday, ANI news agency reported, the first meeting between the two leaders in two years.

Kyrgyzstan's defence officers and representatives of the Congress of Women of the Kyrgyz Republic on Monday shared their experience of meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the officers highlighting the growing defence ties between India and Kyrgyzstan.

Speaking to ANI, Captain Taalaibek of the Ministry of Defence of Kyrgyzstan said, "Meeting with the Prime Minister was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us. It is not every day that you meet the Prime Minister of India, so it was great, and it was very good to have him here in Kyrgyzstan."
