Friday will mark the beginning of two major political events in Rajasthan — the second leg of chief minister Vasundhara Raje’s Gaurav Yatra with a public meeting in Jaisalmer, and Congress’ Sankalp Rally from Shri Sanwariaji Temple in Chittorgarh.

People in Jaisalmer have big expectations — mostly related to announcements of big infrastructure projects in the division — from the chief minister’s public meeting. A number of ministers and officials are camping in Jaisalmer for the past few days to ensure that the yatra goes off smoothly. BJP MLAs and party office-bearers have been visiting villages and hamlets in Jaisalmer and Pokhran to invite people to the public meeting.

For the Congress rally, state president Sachin Pilot, along with AICC general secretaries CP Joshi and Mohan Prakash, reached Udaipur on Thursday and left for Chittorgarh after meeting senior Congress leader Girija Vyas, who is admitted in hospital, to take stock of preparations.

The Congress event will start from the temple in Mandaphia village, 40km from Chittorgarh, dedicated to Lord Krishna. CM Raje will visit Baba Ramdev temple in Ramdevra village in Pokhran after the Jaisalmer public meeting. The Congress event is seen as a counter to Gaurav Yatra.

In Jaisalmer, a huge tent has been put up at Hanuman Chouraha and the route of the CM’s yatra has been beautified. Raje will arrive from Jaipur on a helicopter around 11 am and is scheduled address Sarvjati Mahila Sammelan (women’s convention) before leaving for the venue of the public meeting.

Sources said state power minister Pushpendra Singh was trying to pacify the Rajputs who are upset with Raje and have been making appeals to the community not to boycott the yatra. Jaisalmer MLA Chotu Singh Bhati said preparations are complete and a huge gathering is expected at the public meetings in Jaisalmer and Ramdevra.

A section of farmers has urged the Jaisalmer collector to allow them to meet Raje so that they could apprise her of their problems. The district Congress has submitted a memorandum to the collector asking him to shift the venue of the public meeting from Hanuman Chouraha as it would lead to traffic congestion. The administration has rejected the demand.

The Congress rally will focus on farmer issues, misgovernance of the BJP and unemployment apart from putting forward a united front.

Sankalp Rally will be historic: Pilot

State Congress president Sachin Pilot on Thursday said the Sankalp rally starting from Sanwaliya Seth will be historic.

Addressing newspersons in Udaipur, he said BJP has failed to reply to the charge levelled over Gaurav Yatra -- it is unethical to spend public money on their party election campaign. “Raje instead of Gaurav (pride) Yatra should take out paschatap (repentance) yatra,” he said.

Pilot questioned the yatra, saying “what pride is BJP taking in funeral procession of the farmers? The girls are not safe and the state has become the hub of corruption, then what is the use of the Gaurav Yatra?”

He said the sankalp (oath) is to oust the BJP government. “In Congress government there will be participation of youth, farmers and public. The bypoll results in last four years have cleared people’s inclination towards the Congress,” Pilot said.

People living in the Desert National Park (DNP) area spread over 3,162 km across Jaisalmer and Barmer don’t have basic infrastructure facilities. While the management plan to provide piped water connection, irrigation facilities, roads and regular electricity supply has been approved, the work is yet to start on the ground.

People living in villages and hamlets in DNP are expecting an announcement by the chief minister in this regard.

Two large potable water schemes for Jaisalmer district are facing delays. People expect that the schemes will be implemented on the ground soon so that potable water is freely available.

The first phase of sewerage works undertaken by RUIDP is lying unfinished while the second phase has been sanctioned. People want the unfinished works to be completed soon so that traffic congestions at certain locations are resolved.
