‘Pravasi Bharatiya Divas’ (PBD) commemorates the contributions and achievements of the Indian diaspora to the development of India. It is observed on January 9, the day Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa in 1915. It was first celebrated in 2003 and organised by the Ministry of External Affairs in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
The theme of this year's PBD convention is “Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India's Progress in Amrit Kaal.” Over 3,500 diaspora members from 70 countries have registered for the event, which was held in person for the first time since 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 16th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention was held virtually in 2021.
