Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the diamond jubilee celebrations of the country’s Independence at Hyderabad International Convention Centre, he said certain forces had become a threat to the peace and progress of the nation.

“They are adopting cheap and cunning tactics to create a communal divide. It is time all of us fight these divisive forces and restore the unity and integrity of the nation, to uphold the prestige of India,” he said.

Stating that people were enjoying the fruits of their freedom only because of the sacrifices made by many people, KCR, as the chief minister is called, regretted that some people were even belittling and disrespecting Mahatma Gandhi.

“Mahatma is always Mahatma. We have all grown up learning about Gandhian principles and respecting his ideals. We won’t tolerate any insult to the father of the nation,” he said.

The chief minister said agitations and unrest would continue to prevail as long as there was poverty in the country.

“Even after India attained freedom, there were several movements in the country, like the Telangana armed struggle, Maoist movement etc. Even today, several sections of people like Dalits and minorities are agitating for their rights. The country would achieve all round development only if poverty is completely eradicated,” he said.

He said public servants should keep aside differences and bigotry, keep an open mind and work solely for the progress of the nation and the welfare of the people.
