Thane doctor downloads file on WhatsApp, loses ₹60K in online delivery scam

The fraudster instructed the doctor to download a file, which turned out to be a malicious file, sent to his phone on the pretext of resolving delivery issue.

Police have registered a case against a cyber fraudster after a doctor from Maharashtra's Thane city was duped of 60,000 in an online delivery scam, officials said on Saturday.

Complainant Abdul Vahid Jalaluddin Siddiqui (46), a resident of Mumbra, had purchased items online but did not receive his delivery. When he searched online for customer care assistance, he was unable to reach a valid number.

Shortly afterwards, an unknown individual contacted him via WhatsApp, claiming to be a customer care executive.

The fraudster instructed the doctor to download a file, which later turned out to be a malicious APK file, sent to his phone under the pretext of resolving the delivery issue. Upon downloading and installing the application, the doctor's phone briefly turned off, the police said.

Shortly after restarting the device, he received bank notification alerts informing him that 60,000 had been unauthorisedly debited from his account, they said.

Following his complaint, the Mumbra police registered an FIR under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigation into the case was underway.
