N Chandrasekaran’s decision to step down as Tata Sons chairman has put the spotlight on the wealth and earnings of one of India’s most highly paid corporate leaders.
While his exact personal net worth is not publicly disclosed, his Tata Sons remuneration has run into hundreds of crores.
N Chandrasekaran’s salary: ₹158.66 crore in FY26
According to the Tata Sons FY26 annual report, Chandrasekaran received a total remuneration of ₹158.66 crore for the financial year ending March 31, 2026, compared to ₹155.81 crore in FY25.

This was his highest remuneration since Tata Sons began disclosing executive compensation in FY22, the annual report said.
His FY26 remuneration included ₹17.97 crore in salary and other benefits and ₹140.69 crore as profit-linked commission.
The commission, therefore, accounted for the overwhelming majority of his annual remuneration, with the ₹140.69 crore profit-linked component making up about 89% of his total FY26 pay, based on the figures disclosed in the annual report.
₹671.4 crore earned over five years
Tata Sons’ disclosed executive remuneration figures show that Chandrasekaran earned a cumulative ₹671.4 crore from FY22 to FY26, according to a Business Standard report based on the company’s annual report.
That figure represents remuneration paid by Tata Sons, not his total personal wealth or net worth.
His net worth would also depend on his assets, investments, properties and liabilities, details of which are not available in a public wealth statement.
From TCS to the Tata Sons boardroom
Chandrasekaran joined Tata Consultancy Services in 1987 and went on to become its chief executive officer and managing director in 2009, as per Tata’s official biography and company records.
The Tata Sons board appointed him executive chairman in January 2017, with his tenure beginning on February 21, 2017. Tata said at the time that he had demonstrated leadership as TCS chief executive and managing director.
He was later reappointed for a second term, and he has now decided not to seek another extension. This decision followed a prolonged disagreement involving Tata Trusts and a lack of unanimous board support for his reappointment.
Chandrasekaran’s departure will now make way for Tata Sons to select a new chairman after nearly a decade under his leadership. Reuters reported that the group’s succession process is being closely watched as Tata Trusts, which owns about 66% of Tata Sons, remains a major part of the company’s governance structure.
