The mishap took place when the workers were laying a concrete layer for a part of the bridge being constructed by a Gujarat-based firm over river Rushikulya and the same portion collapsed, causing death of one person and injuries to 10 others, they said.

Eight of the injured labourers were admitted to M K C G Medical College Hospital in Orissa, while two others were discharged after treatment, hospital sources said adding that the deceased worker was identified as Duryodhan Jena.

Senior police and district administration officials have rushed to the site and efforts were on to ascertain the cause of the mishap, police said.

About a dozen other workers escaped unhurt as they fell on a sandy area over the riverbed.

A portion of the same under construction bridge had collapsed in June this year but no casualty had been reported, police sources said.
