On Tuesday evening, when Sujata (name changed) went to a cobbler near her residence in Shivsrushti Colony, Kurla (East), to get her slipper fixed, Afroz Shaikh, a resident of Chembur’s Mhada Colony, and Harish Hashmi kidnapped her, the police said.

“The girl claimed that a burkha-clad woman and the shopkeeper had dragged her into an autorickshaw and took her to Vashi naka,” said Deputy Police Commissioner Dilip Sawant. “We have booked the duo on charges of kidnapping, rape and wrongful confinement. We are looking for their two accomplices, whose names we cannot reveal.”

But why they targeted Sujata is yet to be established, the police added.

The victim’s father, a real estate agent, alleged: “They locked my daughter in a flat at Mhada Colony. After two hours, Hashmi and two unidentified men took turns to rape her. The next morning, Shaikh brought another man who also raped her. The four men even assaulted her and burnt her using cigarette butts.”

Sujata managed to escape on Wednesday when Shaikh took her along to buy vegetables.

“Sujata hired an autorickshaw and called me from a PCO at Tilak Nagar. She was crying, asking me to come and take her home,” said the victim’s father, who filed a complaint against at the Nehru Nagar police station.
