At least 14 people were killed and over 18 were injured in two separate road accidents in Andhra Pradesh in the wee hours on Thursday.

According to the police, six members of a marriage party were killed and 15 were injured when a private bus hit the tractor in which they were travelling.

The accident occurred around 2.30 am on the Khammam-Kothagudem highway, about 200 km north east of the state capital.

Police said that six people died on the spot as the bus coming from the opposite direction had a head-on collision with the tractor. The injured have been admitted to the government hospital in Khammam.

In another accident in the coastal district of Krishna, eight agricultural labourers were killed when an overloaded truck overturned.

The accident occurred in the Pendurti area of the district. Three other labourers were injured in the accident.

This is the second major accident involving farm labourers in the district this month. Ten labourers were killed when a truck heavily loaded with mangoes had overturned at Gamvalagundem village on May 1.

The number of accidents in the state has increased alarmingly in recent weeks. A majority of the accidents are blamed on rash driving, poor road conditions and overloading.

More than 11,000 deaths were reported in road accidents in the state during the previous year.

According to Andhra Pradesh State Road Safety Authority, 31 people die and 109 suffer injuries in road accidents in the state every day.
