The victims, Nilesh Gaonkar and Prerna Khamkar, both in their early twenties, and their five friends are ex-students of Dnyanasadhna college in Thane.

“The incident took place around 11.30 am when four of them ventured into the sea. Since it was low tide, they went deep into the sea and must have got dragged in by the current,” said police inspector Sanjay Patil of Murud police station. “The panchayat has appointed lifeguards who rescued two girls.”

The police said the problem is that people don’t pay heed to warning boards. “There are 18 boards on the Kashid-Murud stretch, warning people not to venture deep into the sea. In four months, nine people have died on this stretch,” Patil said.
