21 polling personnel injured in road mishap

At least 21 polling personnel were injured, two of them seriously, when a mini truck overturned near Malkangiri police station.

At least 21 polling personnel were injured, two of them seriously, when a mini truck overturned near a village in Malkangiri police station area about 19 km from here yesterday, police said.

About 26 persons including some police personnel were on their way to some villages along with election materials when a front wheel of the vehicle got detached leading to the mishap.

The villages, named as MPV 72, MV 42 and MPV 42, had been set up by the government to rehabilitate refugees who had come from the erstwhile East Pakistan after partition.

The injured included three gram rakshis and a constable.

All the injured had been admitted to the district headquarter hospital here, police said.

Earlier reports had said that two persons were injured in the mishap.

Meanwhile, the district election office had sent substitute personnel to perform the polling duty.

The first phase of polls to the lok sabha and the state assembly in orissa is scheduled for tomorrow.
