3,185 consumers to be booked for power theft

In a fresh crackdown against power thefts, the Haryana electricity department has sent vigilance teams in various areas to check the offenders.

The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) will lodge complaints against those caught stealing power in specially designated courts, the DHBVN officials said.

They said under a campaign against electricity theft, Nigam has detected 18,724 cases of power theft during the financial year 2010-11 and imposed penalty of over R44 crore on the offenders.

The teams of Operation Circle Hisar remained at top by detecting 5,935 theft cases followed by Faridabad (4,458 cases), Gurgaon (3,185), Bhiwani (2,980), Narnaul (1,498), and Sirsa (668 theft cases).

Officials said that the inspection teams have also sent reports to police against 10,305 consumers who have failed to pay penalty on time.
