In a dramatic chase that lasted for 15 minutes, three Dadar residents helped the police catch two chain snatchers who were fleeing after robbing a senior citizen on Saturday.
The accused have been identified as Samir Sheikh (25) and Imran Khan (25).
Around 6.15 pm on Saturday, Sangita Shidhore (62), a resident of Park Apartments in Dadar (West), was walking along MTNL lane towards Veer Savarkar Road when the accused, who were on a bike, approached her, the police said.
“Thinking that the accused wanted to park the bike, she moved aside, but the accused stopped the bike in front of her and Sheikh, who was pillion riding, got down and pushed her. He pulled Shidhore’s gold chain and mangalsutra, but as she held on to them, they broke,” said Sub-Inspector Shashikant Yadav.
Three passersby, Sumit Pal (25), Kurush Kerawala (20) and Prashant Thakur (40), witnessed the incident.
Kerawala, who was on a bike with Pal, alerted a police van in the vicinity.
Pal, on the bike and Thakur, who was riding a scooter, started chasing the snatchers.
Seven policemen also joined the chase.
After a few minutes, the accused left their bike near Portuguese Church and started running.
“When I caught Sheikh, he told me that Khan had committed the robbery. I left him and went after Khan, who was running ahead of Sheikh. When I caught Khan, he hit me and bit my hand but I managed to pin him down,” Thakur said.
The police arrested Khan from College lane and traced Sheikh, who was hiding in a nearby house.
“The accused have been booked for robbery. Gold chain and mangalsutra valued at Rs 60,000 have been recovered from the duo and they have been remanded in police custody till Tuesday,” said Yadav.
