Investigating officer, inspector Avinash Mokashi, said Sumant Raut was enjoying a drink at Kokan Kinara Hotel on Ambernath-Badlapur Road around 12 am when Sumedh Karandikar, 24, Ketan Shinde, 22, and Anil Banote, 23, arrived at the hotel for food and drinks.

When the hotel manager turned them away saying it was past closing time, the three got into a heated argument with the manager. When Raut intervened trying to pacify the three men, one of them whipped out a knife and stabbed him. Raut died on the spot due to profuse bleeding and accused fled on their motorbikes. But the police managed to arrest all three accused within six hours.
