The incident occurred during the installation of a water cooler near a mosque at the sensitive Gudri bazaar area.

A group of locals opposed the setting up of the cooler which led to a confrontation in which four people were injured.

The furious mob then went on a rampage and set two motorcycles and a shop on fire. They also pelted stones at each other while shouting slogans.

“Four persons were injured and a shop along with two motorcycles set on fire during the clash”, said Alok Sharma, inspector general (IG) of Meerut zone. The situation was swiftly tackled by the authorities.

Rapid Action Force and Provincial Armed Constabulary have been deployed in the area to control the situation.

Traders from the nearby markets including Sarrafa, valley bazaar, Khair Nagar bazar and Lala Ka Bazar shuttered down their shops.

“We closed down the market to ensure the safety of shopkeepers”, said Sarvesh Kumar, general secretary of Meerut District Bullion Traders Association.
