The accident occurred on the A-31 highway between the towns of Villena and Sax, in the Alicante province.

The retirees were on a trip from the southeastern town of Alcantarilla to Madrid, the state-run news agency EFE reported.

The injured were taken by ambulances and helicopters to hospitals. Five of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear but some reports were blaming it on bad weather.

According to the government's traffic department, the highway was closed for some time on Friday evening due to stormy weather in the area.
