"The five persons were crossing the tracks and did not notice the approaching Patna-Islampur passenger train that had just left the platform number 4 of the station," East Central Railway sources said adding that the incident took place at 9.06pm, they added.

Three of the victims have been identified as Anju Devi, Neelam and their mother Manma Devi, superintendent of railway police PN Mishra told HT.

All the women were residents of Dariapur Gola locality in the state capital, Mishra said, adding one of the male victims had been identified as Pappu Kumar Mandal of Rudrapur under Udhampur police station area in Uttarakhand.

Danapur divisional manager RK Jha said the bodies of the victims had been sent to Patna medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.

Movement of trains on the main line remained affected for some time following the incident. An irate mob had also tried to place bodies on the tracks, demanding a foot overbridge between Rajendra Nagar and Kankarbagh.

Meanwhile, in another incident the Gorakhpur-Kolkata Poorvanchal Express rammed into an SUV at a railway crossing between Jamaui and Jhajha stations. There was, however, no report of any casualties.
