NEARLY HALF-A-DOZEN BJP corporators may join Uma Bharti’s new party whenever it is floated. Although the response to the former chief minister was not quite spectacular on Saturday, a large number of small-time party leaders and workers are said to be in touch with the Sadhvi either through her confidant Bhagwan Das Sabnani or other contacts.

According to sources, many BJP corporators who don’t see any chance of getting any plum post in either the party or the BMC are mulling their prospects in Uma’s party.

However, no big leader is likely to join her even though a majority of them owed allegiance to her when she became the Chief Minister. Most notable of those, who did not join Uma Bharti are Rameshwar Sharma and Alok Sharma.

Sources said that a sizeable number of BJP workers had attended the meetings organised by Bhagwandas Sabnani in the run up to Uma Bharti’s arrival in the State capital on Saturday.

However, it is also being felt by Uma supporters that a more popular leader than Bhagwan Das Sabnani could galvanise the rebels more effectively.

Although Sabnani has been district BJP district president, his political clout is very limited as was evident in the last mayoral election.

Significantly, Shilendra Pradhan, another BJP rebel who unsuccessfully contested mayoral poll, also welcomed Uma Bharti. He is presently in the Nirdaliya Morcha. His chances of joining Uma are bleak as he is seen as victim of the Sadhvi’s ‘favouritism’ as chief minister.

BJP workers and corporators who feel neglected admit that no leader in the BJP takes care of the grassroots workers’ aspirations as efficiently as Didi did.

Many Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha workers also met Uma during her short visit here.
