The incident took place at Netai village on Friday morning when villagers gheraoed the house of a CPI(M) leader who had allegedly sheltered armed goons famously referred as ‘harmad’s by Chidambaram in his recent letter war with West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

The dead were identified as Phulkumari Maity, Sourav Ghorai, Shyamananda Ghorai, Kablu Patra, Dhiren Sen.

While the first three died on the way to hospitals, the last two bodies are still lying in the village.

Several of the injured are in a critical condition.

“They were all innocent villagers and some are our supporters. We have been alleging about armed camps for so long. Now what will the chief minister say about this?” said Prodyut Ghosh who is the secretary of the West Midnapore Trinamool Congress.

The police and administration are maintaining silence on the issue.

Trinamool MP Subhendu Adhikari who is Mamata banerjee’s pointsman in charge of the Maoist-dominated areas, is rushing to the spot.
