The train departed from the Jakarta suburb of Rangkasbitung, with four carriages transporting hundreds of commuter workers.

It is common in Jakarta that many passengers sit on the roof due to the lack of space inside.

"This time too many people were on the roof. The number of passengers is more three times than usual today," Railway Director Soemino Ekosaputro told reporters at the scene.

Soemino said state-run railway firm PT Kereta Api and insurance firm Jasa Raharja would pay medical costs for the injured passengers, including those who did not have tickets.
