The United States paused for a minute of silence on Monday to recall the horror of the September 11 attacks five years ago and pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 people who were killed.

The silence at 8:46 am (1810 IST) marked the exact time five years ago that the first of two hijacked passenger planes ploughed into the World Trade Center. Two other jets later slammed into the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.
President George W Bush observed the silence at a fire station in New York's Lower East Side, to honour the 343 firefighters who were killed.
