City lad making it big with the pen in Mumbai

HIS FATHER’S job in the Railways entitled him to free travel and that tempted Nasir Farhaz to take the trip to tinsel town and try his luck in the glamour world.
He moved to Mumbai in 1981 to write lyrics but ended up becoming a painter to make two ends meet. Hailing from a middle-class family of Babupurwa in Kanpur, Nasir did not lose hope and continued to develop contacts. However, it took two decades for Nasir to get the first breakthrough — he was asked to write a song for a Mahesh Bhatt production, ‘Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar’. His lyrics ‘Aye chaand khoobsurat, aye aasmaan ke taaron...’ was appreciated. However, since the film did not fare well, Nasir went back into oblivion but he kept in touch with his contacts. Perseverance at last paid off and Nasir’s lyrics, ‘In panchchiyon ko dekhkar jaage hain ye armaan’, in Rakesh Roshan’s blockbuster production ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ established his credibility.
Nasir said it was through music director Rajesh Roshan that he met Rakesh Roshan, who was impressed with some of his couplets and gave him a break.
Later, when Rakesh Roshan made the sequel to ‘Koi Mil Gaya’, he asked Nasir to write lyrics for ‘Krrish’ too.
Nasir has written three songs for the film, including ‘Dekho pawan bhi lehra rahi’, ‘Dhoop nikalti hai jahan se chandni’ and ‘Main hoon aasman’. About ‘Krrish’, Nasir said the film was initially titled ‘Koi Tumsa Nahin’. Nasir is now busy to the extent that he has left the job of painting. “I have some important offers from big banners, including the Yash Raj banner and Mukesh Bhatt productions,” he informed.
