THE MEERUT tragedy exposed insensitivity of the administration who bowed before multi-national companies and their local touts, according to Dr Ashish Mittal, secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninst).

In a press release on Friday, he said the reaction of Mulayam Singh Yadav to the tragedy showed that the SP government was just a tool in the hands of these touts and mafia.
Dr Mital claimed that permission for the fair was granted in a jiffy within two days, without even formal sanction from related departments. Innocent people died in this tragedy in which the administration’s complicity was starkly visible. The criminal mindset of the administration was exposed by their efforts to crush the evidence under the might of JCB bulldozers. The hurried disposal of bodies left thousands old parents and young children weeping for the remains of their sons, daughters and parents, amking one wonder whether a more responsible administration could have saved their loved ones. They were not even granted the opportunity to pay their last respects.
He said such fairs were designed to entice unsuspecting middle classes to buy more consumer products and promote sales of MNCs. In the era of liberalisation it had become a norm for the administration to abandon all rules, regulations, safety standards when it came to promotion of big companies and their henchmen. The political masters of the day, the Samajwadi Party and its officials had proved that money was more important than peoples’ lives.
UP Committee of CPI (ML) New Democracy, demanded immediate arrest of the then district magistrate and the superintendent of police for their complicity in this crime. They should be charged with cognizable laxity resulting in deaths of hundreds of unsuspecting people, it said.
