If anyone attracted more attention than Finance Minister P Chidambaram during the Budget in the Lok Sabha, it was perhaps India's most influential business tycoon Anil Ambani.

Ambani, seated in the visitors' gallery in the lower house, closely followed Chidambaram's speech and took down copious notes as the media kept an eye on him throughout.

The Reliance Industries vice chairman and one of India's wealthiest men took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha, or the upper house, this week.

The country's biggest private sector business house is believed to influence many government policies, but it is only now that a member of the family has ventured into politics.

Ambani's face was devoid of expression throughout Chidambaram's two-hour speech even as journalists tried to catch any fleeting response.

After the speech, Ambani briskly strode to the Rajya Sabha with journalists on his tail.

Seated next to Ambani, Bharatiya Janata Party MP and former minister Dilip Singh Judeo also appeared to be attentive, chewing on his fingers at times.

Rajya Sabha MPs, many from the Congress, filled the visitors' gallery, among them Jairam Ramesh, T Subbirami Reddy, Vayalar Ravi and Rajiv Shukla, to name a few.

The Shiv Sena's Sanjay Nirupam was also taking down notes, possibly preparing for the TV microphones he anticipated would be thrust at him.

On the last row were two MPs who kept a low profile - though they are often in the limelight.

The Samajwadi Party's Amar Singh remained by the side of actress Jaya Bachchan, a new MP of his party and the wife of Hindi cinema's living legend Amitabh Bachchan.
