The nursing home where the surgery was performed is run by Dr Vijay Kumar, an anaesthetist, and his wife, Dr Kanchan Lata, a gynaecologist.
“He kept us in the dark about the absence of his wife during the operation. When Prerna’s (the victim’s) condition deteriorated, he referred her to a hospital in Siliguri, where she died due to excessive bleeding,” brother-in-law Kamal Kumar Saha told HT.
Prerna’s husband, Amit Saha, said Dr Kumar had told him she had given birth to a male child but her own condition was critical.
“On his advice, we rushed her to Siliguri, where she died soon thereafter,” he said.
The couple is reported to be ‘absconding’ after a mob ransacked the nursing home in protest against Prerna’s death.
Station House Officer Manoj Kumar Singh said a case had been lodged.
