Police diverted vehicles going to Akkarapettai from a distance of about two km from the village as a precaution following the rumour.

Relief and rehabilitation works going on at the village, which was one of the worst affected regions in Nagapattinam, were stopped for about 45 minutes following the false alarm.

"There was a rumour that the waves were rising in Akkarapettai. We decided not to allow vehicles into the village following the alarm," said Kalayana Sundaram, additional SP at Nagapattinam Police control Room.

The relief activities later resumed at the village after the Indian Meteorological Department assured the district administration that it could not see any artificial rise in the waves along the Akkarapettai coast.
