THE CONSPIRACY to murder Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Krishnanand Rai was hatched by don-turned-politician, Mukhtar Ansari in November last year. Gangster Sanjiv Maheshwari alias Jeeva, arrested by the Delhi Police special cell on Sunday, made this disclosure to the police.
The sensational disclosures by Maheshwari are sure to create a political storm in UP politics. Seven persons including Rai were shot dead in the attack on him. Maheshwari told the police that in November 2005, Ansari planned the murder of Rai and on November 29, 2005, he along with gangster, Munna Bajrangi, Ata-ur-Rehman, Chanchal, Guddu, Naushad and Firdaus killed Rai in Mohammedabad area.
‘‘On an information that Maheshwari would be coming to Siraspur Mor, GT Karnal Road to meet an associate, a trap was laid and he was arrested. A .32 bore revolver was recovered from him,’’ said Karnal Singh, joint commissioner, special cell.
Maheshwari disclosed that Ansari had arranged his bail in all cases that he had been arrested and also stayed with him in Mohammedabad. Ansari, he revealed, introduced him to other gangsters like Munna Bajrangi, as they frequently visited Ansari’s residence.
Police has made a video recording of Maheshwari’s confession, which they would be handing over to the UP Police, which is investigating Rai’s murder. Maheshwari further disclosed that in February 1997, he along with his associates shot dead BJP MLA Brahm Dutt Dwivedi in Farukkabad city.
On April 22, 1997, he was arrested and lodged in Lucknow jail. It was there that he met Ansari, who had been arrested in Rungta kidnapping case of Varanasi. While in jail, Maheshwari planned the murder of Congress leader Bhartendu Handa.
‘‘In 2002 he carried out the sensational kidnapping of businessman Radheshyam Tayal for which they were paid Rs 30 lakh ransom. He was involved in a double murder the same year. A reward of Rs 20,000 was announced on his arrest by the UP Police after he shot dead a prominent cable operator, Devinder Tyagi in 2005,’’ said DCP Ajay Kumar.
