Army rescues 1500 tourists stranded in Sikkim

Around 1500 tourists, who were left stranded due to landslides triggered by snowstorm, were evacuated by the army in Sikkim's upper reaches.

More than 250 tourist vehicles and 1,500 tourists were stranded along the Jawaharlal Nehru Marg in the general area of 17th Mile and the check post at Kyongnosla, an army press release said.

The road on Sunday collapsed near Kyongnosla and at 17th Mile.

The evacuation ended this morning when all the tourists were rescued and moved to safe places, it said, adding both jawans and senior officials came forward in the rescue operation.
