Asaram was arrested on September 1 last year for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl from his Chhindwara gurukul. Currently lodged in Jodhpur jail, he appeared before a district court on Thursday along with four accomplices.

As they were leaving the court, some people in the crowd started arguing with the lawyers and blamed them for Asaram's continuing imprisonment. When a lawyer protested, a group of followers started beating him up.

A mild lathi-charge followed, after which police rounded up many of Asaram’s followers for disturbing law and order.

“We took a group of lawyers to the local ashram to identify the assailants, but no one has been identified yet,” said deputy commissioner of police Rahul Jain.
